We focused on clarity using a note taking sheet to outline values and intentions that underlie most all our responses. We attempted to focus on family successes as a way to identify the clarity that was in place for the success to occur. Clarity allows for safety, success and enjoyment. A participant introduced the opportunity for siblings to work through disagreement to share as an example. We discussed clarity around the expectation that the kids will work out the share of a toy or the toy will be put away for the day. In the process the parent is communicating a limit as well as trust that the kids are strong enough to solve problems. They are given time to come to agreement on how to share; they feel the success of compromise and collaboration and enjoy playing together. All of this can be energized (Stand 2) with appreciative recognition regarding the life skills demonstrated during play. If they don’t work it out in a certain amount of time, the Stand 3 reset (removal) of the toy is done non-energetically (Stand 1). Recognition of no fuss, sadness but no complaining when the rule is enforced sets up a new energetic field and a shift to focus on playing with other toys. Recognizing and discussing the clarity involved in successes allows us to think about how to get more clear in areas that are rocky. We want to think about how to increase safety (emotional and physical), success and enjoyment. Articulating what you want the event to look and sound like also supports clarity and allows the script to write itself because you can then describe what you see and hear based on the expectations you set up. We also talked about different personalities and being able to meet our kids where they are developmentally. Focusing on baby steps for ourselves and our children helps us stay in the moment and break things down. As always we are grateful for the group and the understanding that parenting is a process. 4 attendees
Fishbowl nights are a chance to allow conversation to drift toward the needs of participants. Some areas of focus this evening included:
Techniques shared: Tucker the Turtle Volcano breathing Quantifying volume to support clarity 14 present
We started with successes and tied them to the ways in which we are handling the triggers we experience from self, with family and friends, work and other settings. Our focus was RELATIONSHIP. A highlight for the evening was celebrating our ability to reset ourselves and intense situations. A common thread throughout our discussion was the power of slowing down and resetting so that we give ourselves time to think about our options. STAND 2: Miracles from Molecules...What’s right that we can celebrate? Toll Taker...How did you choose to see the situation? Baby Steps...How did you break it down for yourself or others involved? Different people have different needs around stand two in terms of the amount of words, as well as the frequency and the intensity of recognition. This means being attuned to matching our energy to the needs of the recipient. This is related to the fire hose - sprinkler continuum mentioned in the previous session with Tanya Frasier. Pause to allow time for your words and feelings to come. Also pause to assure that the recognition lands (is received). This takes practice. Some practices people shared around Stand 2
STAND 1: Co-parenting challenges are real and addressing negativity in the midst of it is not helpful. It’s important to have conversations with other adults around how we might reset one another or groups so that it doesn’t come across as offensive or undermining. STAND 3: Think about the reset as a gift. Humor in the heat of the moment can diffuse. Then get back to being serious and giving clarity. Always remember we can add new rules! Some struggles with the kid who seeks loopholes. A reminder to notch up all three stands. Closing... At the end of the session, we set private intentions related to specific relationships we wanted to foster during the coming weeks. Topics for future meetings:
Tanya Fraizer, Children's Success Foundation, Director of Trainer Outreach Notch Up Your Nurtured Heart Approach @ the VAHS PAC, January 24, 2017 6-7:30 (54 attendees, about 8 Heroes)
Nine attendees . . . We began by introducing the name of the group, Nurturing Hearts Heroes, and our mission. This included an overview of our developing website, how to register for upcoming sessions, and considerations for how our web prescence can best serve. Next a handout with guidelines for the group was introduced, followed by an opportunity to share successes since our last meeting. We will begin each session with an opportunity to share successes, so that is something Heroes can anticipate. Nurturing Hearts Heroes Groundrules:
The major focus of the meeting was the discussion of several written scenarios (below). We identified where we could see evidence of The 3 Stands of the NHA. We closed by sharing some take aways: Stand 1:
Next steps and wants:
Scenarios discussed are below: Approximately 12 in attendance, we shared reasons for committing the evening and worked to develop a vision for how the Verona Area School District could support parents and other caregivers once they've taken the introductory training. We set a tone for sharing and safety as well as for celebrating successes. Participants told parenting stories and raised questions about the Approach. We discussed the need for a structure and possible topic focus for each meeting. Following the meeting, facilitators, Gail Anderson and Paula Wick, then took the information to Central Office and advocated for the monthly meeting format (with childcare!). Collaboration regarding communication and organization to construct this site and to facilitate registration for monthly meetings was initiated after the meeting by Molly and Anne!
